Third-party liability insurance is mandatory when renting a car in Costa Rica. However, this legal coverage is quite limited, which is why rental companies also offer optional protections such as CDW, LDW, and Zero Liability coverage. Understanding what's included before you book can help you avoid unexpected costs and enjoy your trip with peace of mind.

Liability Insurance

This coverage protects against body injury to third parties, meaning it covers injuries to people outside the rental vehicle only (it does not cover material damage).

• In Costa Rica, the mandatory minimum coverage provided through the SOA (Seguro Obligatorio de Automóviles) is 6 million CRC, which is approximately USD 10,000 per accident.

• Basic Third-Party Liability coverage is always included in our rates.

• Jumbo Car Costa Rica offers an optional Third-Party Liability extension to increase the minimum coverage and to include material damage (see the list of available protection options).

Non-mandatory Liability Protection Extension is a complementary to the Legal Liability Insurance.This protection covers greater expenses than minimum excess amounts required by Costa Rican government in case of sinister.

Minimum Compulsory accident coverage : 10.000 USD

Non-mandatory Liability Protection Extension

• Damages to third parties Persons :200.000 USD

• Damages to third parties Materials :60.000 USD

• Complementary: 300 000 USD

• Passengers: 20.000 USD

• In case of Death :5.000 USD

No other Protection (sold on the internet or from bank card) for liability insurance is accepted.

Minimum age for renting a vehicle at Jumbo Car Costa Rica is 25 years old and at least 3 years of driving experience. However if you are younger you may still be able to rent a car.

• If you’re 18 years’ old or older with at least 1 year of driving experience, you can rent an Economy car if you sign up for Young Drivers’ Protection.

• If you’re 21 years’ old or older with at least 2 years of driving experience, you can rent any car you want (but the Full Size and Prestiges models) if you sign up for Young Drivers’ Protection.

Young Driver Protection price varies upon vehicle and rental duration.You can sign up for this protection when making your reservation online or upon vehicle pickup at our agency.

Maximum age for renting a car from Jumbo Car Costa Rica is 75 years’ old.

+75 years’ old drivers can also rent a vehicle but they must sign up for a complementary Senior Drivers’ Mandatory Protection. Price varies upon vehicle and rental duration.

You can sign up for this Protection while making your online reservation or at our agency when picking up your vehicle.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) gathers Collission Damage Waiver (CWD) + Theft Damage Waiver (TDW).

If the car’s body gets damaged, the most you will pay is the damage excess. Excess amount to pay in case of a damage differs according to the vehicle. If you wish to lower the amount you may sign up for Partial Loss Damage Waiver (50% of regular excess amount) or Super Loss Damage Waiver or Loss Damage Waiver+ .(0 Excess Amount)

This protection is included in prices displayed on our website. However pay attention as depending on which channel you book your rental through, this protection might be mandatory but not included.

If you wish not to subscribe to this protection, please contact us to receive a specific quote. The presentation of a certificate showing the coverage of the rental vehicle in Costa Rica for the duration of your rental for a minimum of USD 60,000 will be mandatory.

Partial Loss Damage Waiver (PLDW) is a complementary protection to Lost Damage Waiver protection.

Partial Loss Damage Waiver Protection brings down Franchise to pay by 50% in case of a calamity.

Rental Car franchise amount is display when selecting your vehicle on our website, and is also indicated in Terms of Sales.This protection is not mandatory and is therefore not included in vehicle rental prices displayed on our website.

You may sign up to this protection on our website while making your reservation or at Airport agency counter when picking up your car.

Window and Tire Breakage Protection covers tire punctures and damages to windows and windshield during whole rental period.

Franchise is brought down to $0.00 in case of damages or accident to these parts of your rental vehicle.

Excludes rims and Road Assistance.

You may sign up for this option when booking your car or from one of our agencies’ counter.

For a cancellation made at least 24 hours before the date and time of the rental, the tenant is fully refunded.
Beyond this period, the amount of the reservation subject to an advance payment will not be refunded.

Prepaid reservations carried out on our website are non-modifiable and non-cancellable.

However, if you sign up for our Booking Modification Insurance you may modify your booking free of charge up to 24 hours prior vehicle pick up (driver’s name, category vehicle, pick up date, return date, pick up agency, return agency...).
